Lifting / Solvent Aggression

The topcoat lifts the underlying layer, leading to wrinkles, swelling, or the formation of bubbles.

Description:

Lifting or solvent aggression is usually caused by improper painting conditions or incompatible paint layers.

Cause:

  1. The topcoat is sprayed before the underlying layer has dried.
  2. Inappropriate evaporation time between layers.
  3. Poor solvent resistance of the undercoat or excessively strong solvent in the topcoat.
  4. Poor adhesion of the underlying layer.
  5. Excessively thick layers.

Repair:

  1. Lightly sand the affected area, seal the surface, and respray.
  2. Be especially careful with sensitive substrates: keep each layer thin and allow sufficient evaporation time.
  3. If lifting is severe, remove the entire area completely and repaint the full paint system.
